Our goal is to create a pristine landscape by removing a tree in its entirety, including the stump. (We can include an addition to your stump grinding quote for grinding below ground level or removing the stump entirely, all depending on what your end goal is for your property.)

What is stump grinding?

When a tree is removed a stump is left behind, usually about 6 — 12 inches above ground. Stump grinding addresses this with a self-propelled stump grinder machine on rubber tracks that is used to grind the stump down below ground level (usually four to six inches).

If requested we can grind the stump further below our normal procedure for an additional cost. Anything below this level is left for mother nature to do her part and any remaining stump and root system eventually decays over time. Grinding the stump produces wood chips that are left behind to fill the hole and surrounding area. The size of the stump will determine how many wood chips are left behind. You can also request that chips be removed for an additional cost. Opting for stump grinding while the crew is onsite removing your trees also saves you money versus grinding stumps at a later time.

What is stump removal?

While stump grinding is the preferred method most people chose there also is stump removal. This process is more intense and can become expensive. This process usually entails extra equipment (such as an excavator) to dig up the stump. Once the stump is removed you are left with a hole that you would need to have filled with dirt. Depending on the outcome you are trying to receive usually stump grinding will suffice.

The benefits of stump grinding over removal include:

  • Less mess. Large tree stumps can have roots balls that can be extremely large, with roots that are up to 10 times larger than the trunk itself. Removing a stump like this, along with the roots, will leave you with a gaping hole in your yard that will need to be filled in.
  • Lower cost. Filling in a large hole on your property costs money — not just for materials, but for the labor involved to make sure the job is done right.
  • Free wood chips. Grinding a tree stump produces natural wood chips that you can use for mulch to enhance your garden and landscaping as you see fit.
  • Flat space. When a stump is ground, it is ground below the surface, ready for nature to take its course. This provides a solid base for a fresh layer of dirt and grass seed that will blend in perfectly with the rest of your yard.
